Kiruna
Kiruna, located in northern Sweden in the Norrbotten region, is the country's northernmost city, home to about 18,148 people. The city's name derives from the white ptarmigan, called giron by the Sami. It lies by Lake Luossajärvi at the foot of the Kiirunavaara and Luossavaara mountains, known for their iron ore mines. The city features a wooden church modeled after a Sami tent and the Geophysical Institute, which studies the northern lights. Kiruna is best visited in winter when you can admire snowy landscapes and the aurora borealis.
